About
Jenn The TUTOR
Growing up, I was the Principal’s kid. I spent almost every single day of my childhood either near a school, headed to a school, and/or hearing about issues and concerns relating to a school.
While I had obstacles, I had all the support I needed to go to college and by the time I turned 25, I had met all the goals I set as a child.
Graduated top of my class completing majors in History, Political Science, and Sociology (Phi Beta Kappa, Honors, Summa Cum Laude) from Virginia Tech.
Gained admissions and a merit scholarship to the University of Virginia School of Law.
Graduated from law school and passed the Virginia Bar Exam.
But there was just this one thing holding me back; I did not actually want to be a lawyer.
Luckily for me, the recession demolished the job market in 2009, the year I graduated from law school, and there were no legal jobs available. So, I started on the path of becoming a tutor and a second-generation educator.
Today, after a decade of providing SAT and ACT tutoring and college admissions consulting to high school students, one thing is crystal clear:
the college admissions process is Intentionally broken
There are giant, systemic changes that need to happen to make college more equitable and more accessible to historically excluded students and students with disabilities – I fight every day to create change.
On the national level:
I meet with lawmakers and lobby at the White House.
I frequently contribute to national media like The Washington Post and NPR.
I am a sought-after speaker at conferences and educational events.
But, as I learned from my parents who dedicated their lives to public service, the biggest direct impact I can make is on a grassroots level in my own backyard.
As a college admissions counselor serving first generation, historically excluded students, and student with disabilities, I’m dedicated to:
Revealing the truth about the college admissions program.
Reducing distractions and dispelling misguided principles.
Advocating for test-optional admissions.
Getting more Black women enrolled and graduated from universities.
Helping students find and get admitted to best-fit colleges.
Educating admissions directors on how to best serve first generation, historically excluded students, and students with disabilities.
My students have successfully received admissions to over 20 different colleges and universities, many of whom are attending college on full-ride or partial-ride scholarships. Notably, I helped two students achieve their dreams of becoming a Ron Brown Scholar and FOSSI Scholar.
As Michelle Obama tells us, “Be focused. Be determined. Be hopeful. Be empowered. Empower yourselves with a good education, then get out there and use that education to build a country worthy of your boundless promise.”
And we’re just getting started.
